Trade chat – we all love to hate it

Joana Leveling Guide

You know that I’m talking about, right? I’m sure you do!

Please raise your hands all those of you who didn’t read at least once in your gaming experience the endless bullshit that rolls in /2.

No hands up?

Good.

Now, the situation is not peach and roses on [EU]Daggerspine either. Oh no, we sure have our share of bored people here.

I’ve identified 4 types of spam rolling in trade chat:

  1. Dirge (and variations) spam;
  2. Crafting and recruitment spam;
  3. Bored spam;
  4. Gold spam;

“WTF, you left gold spamming last?” Yes. Because it’s the far less worst type. In the last two weeks, I didn’t see more than 10 adverts total. Well, yeah, it’s true, I don’t play a lot and when I do I’m usually out of towns or in BGs. But, you know, used to be far worst so I’m glad that stopped.

More spamming fun after the jump. Ni-hao!

Dirge spam – it’s Dirgetastic!

Dirge spam distinguishes its self to be a real plague. I dare say it become a social phenomenon. Nowadays I’m sure that if you try and make an honest buck selling it you would get at least 5 instant reports for spamming.

On other servers, Dirge is replaced by different combinations, such as Pauldrons of Wild Magic, Murloc Movie titles, “2girls1<insert item name>.com”, “the Nicker” and many, many, many, many others. Which is, in fact, a really interesting subject to talk about. How can people on so wide-spread servers have the same behavior? The answer is out there to be found and I’m sure it involves a lot of psychology and human behavior analysis.

But! Let’s move to the next type of spam:

Crafting and recruitment spam

Hehehe, probably one of the best spam there is. The type of people that do this are the “oh, sorry, I lagged and pressed my macro button several times / second just to make sure it works. But just look how many I can craft, and cheap too!” type. You met people like this right? I sure did!

I also saw Guild Recruitments in the wonderful trade channel and I don’t mind. Up to a point of course. Advertising your guild is ok, as long as you don’t repeat the same message over and over again, several times in a single minute, just to make sure you reach each and every one of the players on the servers. /facepalm I know you’re eager about your “newly formed guild with experienced players that plan to raid end-game whisp me for inv” or inpatient to fill your raid positions with new and fresh meat, but before you jump like a fat kind on candy to the trade chat, stop and think for a second on what you are about to do.

Bored spam

Bored spam is a spam that comes out of boredom. Really, it is. People, at a point in their game-play, get bored. That’s a well known fact. Not with the game, but just at a certain hour, certain place, they get bored. And start to socialize with other people. And what better place to chat than the trade chat? “We’re trading knowledge, you ignorant baboon!”. “Yeah, and your mother is fat!”. “no u!”.

And bored people tend to come up with the most crazy ideas ever! Like, imagine this: what if we were to improve the Dirge spam, by starting a sentence with “anal” and then linking a skill? Now wouldn’t that be fun? Yes, of course it would be! Let’s start doing it for several hours without interruption! Oh, and let’s repeat the same thing that some other random guy already said! Yeah, awesomesauce! “anal First Aid”, “anal Sap”, “anal Execute”, “anal Silence”, “anal Rupture” and many many many more have flooded the trade chat. Sometimes I wonder what the GMs are doing, cause these things last for at least 1 hour every damned day.

/gasp

But Tepisor, teach us what to do!

You have two options:

  1. Start reporting and ignoring all the people involved in the spam;
  2. Get some addons to solve your problems, like Dirge Spam Blocker, Annoying Spam Blocker or SpamMeNot;

Conclusions

Don’t spam. kkthnxbai
