Now, let’s back up a little.

What was the raid util­ity of hav­ing Black­smithing before WotLK?

Zero.

What was the finan­cial gain of hav­ing Black­smithing before WotLK?

Almost zero.

What will be the util­ity of hav­ing Black­smithing after WotLK?

Close to OVERNINETHOUSAND!

Well, prob­a­bly not. But what I see here are some seri­ous buffs.

Those two Titansteel weapons? Prob­a­bly the best tank­ing weapons for Pro­tec­tion Pal­adins (mid level).

Capac­ity to add extra sock­ets to items? Hell yeah gimme more!

Ok, all seems good, now let’s dis­cuss some issues here.

Notice that all those items are BoE. For now. So, one does not need to be a BS to have them. Which is cool, but I doubt they will stay BoE for live.

Regard­ing the extra sock­ets, it seems that, again, you don’t have to be a BS to use them. For now. Also, the abil­ity could only work for non-socketed items. It doesn’t say if you can add more than 1 socket, doesn’t say the color of the sock­ets so things are really uncer­tain in this field. Look­ing for­ward to some near future clarifications.

Tak­ing all these into con­sid­er­a­tion, it might be good to actu­ally have Blacksmithing.

I have Enchanting/Jewelcrafting. I HAD 375 BS before I dropped it for Enchant­ing. But I don’t regret it. Because of this. And of this. And because I made a lot of gold from it. And I will cer­tainly not drop it because of this.

Drop­ping Jew­el­craft­ing is out of the ques­tion. It is the sin­gle most prof­itable pro­fes­sion cur­rently in game. And it also gives acces to some good BoP gems.

So where does that leave us? There is only 1 answer:

   I’m an Engi­neer / Miner, and I’m seri­ously con­sid­er­ing tak­ing Black­smithing at 80 if the meta-gem socket adding bit goes through. I’ll have to weigh the inher­ent sta­mina bonus that min­ers are get­ting ver­sus that, but It seems like it will cer­tainly be worth it.
