There isn’t much of a difference between them. But I don’t want to discuss about that.

What concerns me are two things:

1. the looks;
2. 4-piece set bonus;

I didn’t play pre-TBC so I’m not a fanboi of the set. Simply put: I hate the looks! Those shoulders ruin everything with their excessive pointy shizzle and I simply refuse to wear something like that (I really pity the Draenei now). Because how you look is the most important thing in World of Warcraft and you know it!

It’s basically a site that scans the armory for builds and then lists the most popular ones, divided by classes and specs. It’s very nifty and gives you a wholesome idea of the state in which a class is currently in.

The Dilemma

I took a look at the Paladin Protection specs people are using most and well.. I was not amused. The top 3 specs have 5 points in Seals of the Pure. I ask, why? For threat? Threat is not an issue these days. I tank with Seal of Light up and I have absolutely no threat problems. Even moreso, SoR and SoW do considerably less damage than before, so they aren’t the first choice while tanking (even with the expertise glyph). But then again, I was thinking: 15% for the Judgement effects. Does that include the procs triggered by Judgements, like the one from Libram of Obstruction? If that’s the case, it might be worth it. So I ask again, does the 15% apply to effects triggered by Judgements or only to the actual damage done by the Judgement?

El Big Gaspe!

Another thing that poked me right in the eye is that the top build (most used that is) has Divine Guardian. At this point I was like, hello? am I missing something here? What’s the point in taking it? I know I’ve been busy doing heroics and clearing 10-man Naxx and I’m not really updated with the latest Paladin news, but has the world turned upside down? Please, someone explain, I’m baffled why any Protection Paladin would what to chose that talent and waste 2 points with it.

I guess asking two questions in a single post is a big too much. I admit, I’m a bit lazy to read all the 500+ unread posts I have in my Google Reader. Maybe something ground breaking happened to the world of Protection Paladins that I’m not aware of.

We take hits and we love it. We have high repair bills and we don’t complain. Some of us even tank with their face.

Of all the characters in a raid, we’re the most hated because we have “threat”. Apparently there’s something about us that makes us more threatening than that MM hunter with an 18k Kill Shot crit. Is it our spiky shoulders? Or our goofy helmet?

Or maybe it’s the eyes. Maybe each time we tank, we get the crazy eyes and mobs get nuts! Funny, because I never look at their eyes.

Do you? Did you ever zoom in first person just to see the look on his/her/the things face while pounding on you, trying to kill?

I never do because I’m affraid.

A question for all tanks

I want you to look at the following pictures from my combat log.

In the first two you see me doing a round 4800 Holy crit with Shield of Righteousness. In the last one, you see me doing (again) a ~4800 crit, followed by a 1k then a 2.1k Hammer of Righteous.

So, in the time span of roughly 3 seconds (give or take 1 second for being a slacker), I managed to dish out almost 8k Holy damage. 8000 Holy damage. Do you realize what this means? Let’s forget the damage for a second and just think of all the threat I’ve put out with that.

Sure, it is highly dependable on the crit rate.

Being mostly an off-tank, I decided to go with the following build, which is mainly a helpful raid-wide build: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sZaxVA0uMteIRGoxfM0o

I’ve taken (after much debate and consideration on my raid’s composition) 3 points in Improved Devotion Aura (6% more healing). I also took Judgements of the Just to see how it goes. From the Retribution tree I went for Heart of the Crusader for 3% more crit chance and Vindication for 20% reduced attributes on trash/mobs.

With this build and the current gear I have I get around 15% crit chance when HoC is up.

First epic I bought was Libram of Obstruction. It costs 15 Emblem of heroism and it’s a great replacement for the standard Protection Paladin libram, Libram of Repentance. It does a very nifty thing: it increases your shield block value by 352 for 5 seconds.

You want SBV. Why? Because Shield of Righteousness does holy damage based on your SBV. More SBV, more damage done. Which you want.

With my current gear I’m at 822 + 352 from libram = 1174 SBV.

So, getting back to my point: how to achieve those lovely crits?

Just follow these simple steps:

1. Buy Libram of Obstruction;
2. Spec in Heart of the Crusader;
3. Run to a mob and in the span of max 4 seconds do the following: Judge -> spam SoR -> spam HoR;
4. ???????????
5. PROFIT!

Hopefully you’ll get the same results as me. My face turns into a big smile when I see them.

P.S.: I managed 6k crits in my Spell Damage gear;

P.P.S.: I hate how Warriors do double damage more than us in any raid. Not fair, QQ!

The problem with Protection Paladins

I was playing around with the talent calculator when I stumbled on a problem that I faced many times: reaching our 51-points talent doesn’t feel right when only taking PvE talents. I know, it sounds weird but try and follow me some more.

Take a look at the picture below.

It’s a standard build with only 24 points invested. Where to go from now? Taking Soicism, Guardian’s Favor, Divine Guardian or Improved Hammer of Justice is wrong, just wrong if you want to PvE.

So basically, in order to move on, we have two choices: take Improved Devotion Aura or Reckoning.

Improved Devotion Aura

Will give 602.5 Armor and 6% more healing on the targets affected at level 80. Does NOT stack with Tree of Life from Druids. Meaning, if you spec into this and raid with a Tree, you just wasted 3 talent points.

Reckoning

Great for leveling, bad for endgame rading. Gearing yourself means you’ll get hit less. Getting hit less makes Reckoning not to proc. Reckoning not procing = you just wasted 5 talent points.

Other solutions

In order to move forward down into the tree, with the build I showed in the image above, we only need 1 talent point. Only 1 more talent point. But where to put it? Investing only 1 point in a talent just doesn’t feel good, right? But if we don’t like eighter Reckoning nor Improved Devotion Aura, we need to make that sacrifice.

So what should we do? At the moment I have no idea. I doubt Blizzard will fix this until Wrath of the Lich King so I’m guessing we’re stuck at gimping our builds.

Gimp? What do you mean?

Let’s say I’m level 80, I’m so good gear that Reckoning doesn’t proc to my satisfaction and I raid not with 1, but several Resto Druids. Let’s think, what are my choices? Get my point?

Conclusion

We can’t benefit from our 51 points talent without investing at least 52 points, while taking only PvE viable talents.

A viable PvE build for a Protection Paladin requires at least 54 points in the Protection tree, one being wasted exactly because of the problem described above.

But I guess the persons capable of fixing this are too busy nerfing Retri…
