Tankadin DPS is not a lie anymore

Kinda. It’s improper to say “DPS” because we still make neg­li­gi­ble dam­age when in a raid, but while questing/grinding it has greatly improved.

I want you to look at the fol­low­ing pic­tures from my com­bat log.

In the first two you see me doing a round 4800 Holy crit with Shield of Right­eous­ness. In the last one, you see me doing (again) a ~4800 crit, fol­lowed by a 1k then a 2.1k Ham­mer of Right­eous.

So, in the time span of roughly 3 sec­onds (give or take 1 sec­ond for being a slacker), I man­aged to dish out almost 8k Holy dam­age. 8000 Holy dam­age. Do you real­ize what this means? Let’s for­get the dam­age for a sec­ond and just think of all the threat I’ve put out with that.

Sure, it is highly depend­able on the crit rate.

Being mostly an off-tank, I decided to go with the fol­low­ing build, which is mainly a help­ful raid-wide build: http://www.wowhead.com/?talent=sZaxVA0uMteIRGoxfM0o

I’ve taken (after much debate and con­sid­er­a­tion on my raid’s com­po­si­tion) 3 points in Improved Devo­tion Aura (6% more heal­ing). I also took Judge­ments of the Just to see how it goes. From the Ret­ri­bu­tion tree I went for Heart of the Cru­sader for 3% more crit chance and Vin­di­ca­tion for 20% reduced attrib­utes on trash/mobs.

With this build and the cur­rent gear I have I get around 15% crit chance when HoC is up.

First epic I bought was Libram of Obstruc­tion. It costs 15 Emblem of hero­ism and it’s a great replace­ment for the stan­dard Pro­tec­tion Pal­adin libram, Libram of Repen­tance. It does a very nifty thing: it increases your shield block value by 352 for 5 seconds.

You want SBV. Why? Because Shield of Right­eous­ness does holy dam­age based on your SBV. More SBV, more dam­age done. Which you want.

With my cur­rent gear I’m at 822 + 352 from libram = 1174 SBV.

So, get­ting back to my point: how to achieve those lovely crits?

Just fol­low these sim­ple steps:

  1. Buy Libram of Obstruc­tion;
  2. Spec in Heart of the Cru­sader;
  3. Run to a mob and in the span of max 4 sec­onds do the fol­low­ing: Judge -> spam SoR -> spam HoR;
  4. ???????????
  5. PROFIT!

Hope­fully you’ll get the same results as me. My face turns into a big smile when I see them.

P.S.: I man­aged 6k crits in my Spell Dam­age gear;

P.P.S.: I hate how War­riors do dou­ble dam­age more than us in any raid. Not fair, QQ!

    I’ve noticed my crits slowly creep­ing up, I love it. I broke 700 spell power in full tank­ing gear. In Naxx last night, I was OT’ing a group of 5 and tab­bing through the mobs, I was barely under the warrior’s threat on any­thing he had aggro on, and he had almost none on things I was tanking.

    psh im dish­ing out moar dps then war­riors in like gear…Getting 7k SoR crits brings my dps up too 1300 in heroic 5mans and i was doing 1650 in 25man vault and OS. Good good fun oh and 3-5k tps nor­mal and 5-7k in raids even more with tricks and MDs going but thats not threat com­ing from me.

    Hey, you say u have 822 defense.. must kick ass, but I wanna know how much health you have.. because i can’t seem to have enough life or enough defense.. and also could u do a guide for what is the best equip­ments and enchants we can have on them ? thanks

    @spykeku — no, 822 was my Shield Block Value, which has now risen to 962.

    Now I’m only level 66, but my prot pally can keep up with the dps from most equiv­a­lent lev­els. I think this has sev­eral rea­son. 1. I quest with a ret pally, which gives me two things: ret­ri­bu­tion aura and replen­ish­ment from his judg­ment spells. 2. Another buddy plays a druid and has some buff or tal­ent that restores mana. I leave bless­ing of wis­dom on and spam judg­ment of wis­dom. This might not be the best for dps, but it keeps avengers shield, ham­mer of right­eous­ness, con­se­cra­tion, and the occa­sional ham­mer of wrath flow­ing. I have trou­ble keep­ing up with a DK in DPS, but I’ve always had more DPS the ret pally.

    I have no prob­lem with threat as long as right­eous furry is on. Unless the DK uses his death grip, or some­one taunts for added chal­lenge of main­tain­ing aggro.

    So from my expe­ri­ence, DPS tank­ing is not a lie at all.
